The Government of Ghana, through the Ghana National Gas Company Limited, has announced plans to construct a second gas processing plant, known as GPP2. This development was revealed by Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor during the Africa Energy Forum at the 2025 Offshore Technology Conference.
The initiative reflects President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to achieving energy sufficiency and positioning Ghana as a key player in the sub-Saharan energy sector. The first Ghana Gas Processing Plant (GPP1) was established under the leadership of the late President John Evans Atta Mills and Mahama.
Although there was a plan for a second facility, the previous administration did not advance its construction. Upon returning to office, Mahama pledged to realize the GPP2 project. The new plant is expected to create jobs for young graduates and enhance Ghana’s energy independence. Additionally, it aims to provide a continuous supply of affordable and reliable power, benefiting both domestic and industrial consumers, as well as allowing for exports to neighboring countries. The government’s focus on this infrastructure aims to stimulate economic growth in the region.
