Gas supply disruption sparks power outage across several parts of the country

A widespread power outage was recorded across the country on Wednesday night after a major gas processing facility supplying fuel to thermal power plants experienced a technical fault, leading to an emergency shutdown.

The outage, which began around 7 p.m., left several parts of the country without electricity.

In a joint statement, Ghana National Gas Company and Ghana Grid Company Limited confirmed that the disruption was caused by a failure in the Burner Management System BMS controller linked to the Heat Medium System HMS, a key component of the plant’s operations.

Preliminary technical assessments indicated that the affected system sustained significant damage and would need to be fully replaced, necessitating the shutdown of the facility.

The institutions disclosed that a detailed technical and safety risk assessment is ongoing to determine the quickest and safest way to restore operations.

They added that engineers are working continuously to replace the faulty components and accelerate the restoration process.

According to the statement, Ghana Gas is expected to begin steps toward restoring operations once the ongoing assessments are completed.
