Eskom Boosts Maintenance Efforts to Strengthen Grid for Winter Demand

Eskom has temporarily halted load shedding across South Africa in early April 2025, attributing the grid’s stability to intensified maintenance activities. The utility reported that 14.85% of its generation fleet is currently under planned maintenance—a 3.8% rise from the same period last year—aimed at enhancing reliability ahead of peak winter demand. Meanwhile, unplanned outages have dropped to 28.5%, reflecting a 2.85% year-on-year improvement. Diesel usage cost R3.6 billion over the last month, slightly down from the previous period, as Eskom strategically uses emergency reserves to manage peak consumption.
