Energy Ministry approves $3.4B renewable plan to power schools, hospitals, universities.”

The Ministry of Energy has approved a $3.4 billion renewable energy program to transform Ghana’s power sector, with a strong focus on public institutions including schools, hospitals, and universities. The initiative, announced at a stakeholder engagement on August 7, will deliver clean energy solutions such as off-grid and grid-tied systems, battery storage, and electric vehicles, while easing pressure on the national grid.

Over 12,000 renewable units are earmarked for public secondary schools and hospitals, with procurement in its final stages pending bank approval. Universities will also benefit, including the University of Ghana, which is set to receive a 3.5-megawatt ground-mounted solar system funded through the German-supported Government’s Solar program.
