Beginning July 1, 2025, Ghanaians will face higher electricity and water costs as the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) announces a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs. This adjustment will affect residential, non-residential, and special load tariff customers. The decision follows a thorough analysis of macroeconomic factors, including inflation rates, exchange rate fluctuations, and rising fuel costs.
The PURC cited a projected average inflation rate of 20.67% and a Ghana Cedi to US Dollar exchange rate of GH¢10.3052 as key considerations. Additionally, the weighted average cost of gas has risen to USD 7.7134/MMBtu. The commission emphasized that the tariff increase was approved after careful evaluation of existing conditions, aiming to balance the competitiveness of industries with the living standards of Ghanaians.
While electricity tariffs will increase, water tariffs will remain unchanged, with a 0.00% adjustment for the third quarter of 2025. The new electricity rates will be effective from July 1 until September 30, 2025, marking a significant development in the utility sector amid ongoing economic challenges.
