ECG Warns Customers About Mobile Money Fraud Schemes

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a warning to customers regarding mobile money fraud schemes that solicit payments for services such as meter installation and debt cancellation. General Manager Ing. George Amoah reported that numerous customers have fallen victim to these scams, with fraudsters impersonating ECG officials and demanding payments through mobile money accounts, which the company does not have.

During a media briefing on September 8, 2025, Amoah described how these fraudsters typically contact customers via social media or phone calls, instructing them to transfer money to specific mobile money numbers for purported services. He emphasized that all legitimate transactions should be conducted through the ECG PowerApp or the shortcode *226#, which avoids mobile money charges.

Amoah recounted specific incidents, including one where a customer was tricked into paying GH¢900 for a meter installation, only to be asked for an additional GH¢500 after the initial payment. Another case involved an elderly man who lost GH¢2,000 to fraudsters. The General Manager reassured customers that ECG is collaborating with security agencies to investigate and apprehend these criminals.

He outlined the correct procedure for applying for a meter, which includes completing wiring with certified electricians and paying a registration fee of GH¢100. Amoah clarified that replacing faulty meters is free and reiterated that customers should not pay anyone claiming otherwise. Additionally, he dismissed rumors of meter shortages, stating that ECG has sufficient inventory to meet demand as part of its Loss Reduction Project.
