Diplomats Praise GERD for Promoting Development and Energy Security in Ethiopia

Diplomats in Ethiopia have lauded the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a pivotal achievement that fosters development and enhances energy security in the region. In an interview with ENA, Bangladesh Defense Attaché Brigadier General G M Shariful Islam emphasized the dam’s completion as a major milestone, reflecting the collective effort of the Ethiopian people and their unity across diverse backgrounds. He noted that GERD, with a capacity to generate approximately 5,200 megawatts of electricity, will not only provide power for Ethiopian households but also stimulate industrial development and enable electricity exports to neighboring countries.

Nigeria’s Deputy Ambassador Maxy Ogbede highlighted that the dam aligns with regional aspirations for improved energy output, infrastructure, and community ties within Africa. He expressed optimism for the enhanced electricity supply and the positive impact on the Nile region. Burundi Ambassador Willy Nyamitwe commended the Ethiopian people’s efforts, stating that the GERD exemplifies what can be achieved through unity and determination. He noted that the project was funded and supported by Ethiopians, showcasing their leadership and ability to accomplish ambitious goals.

The inauguration of the GERD is seen as a symbol of national pride and a catalyst for regional collaboration, inspiring hope for a more prosperous future in Eastern Africa. Collectively, the diplomats affirmed their support for Ethiopia’s monumental achievement and its potential to transform the region’s energy landscape and quality of life.
