Ghana’s main hydropower facility at the Akosombo Dam is steadily recovering after recent disruptions to the national grid, with engineers working to fully restore all remaining generation units following a fire incident at the substation.
The Ghana Grid Company says at least 550 megawatts have now been restored after a fourth unit was brought back online, recovering more than half of the roughly 1,000 megawatts lost after the April 23 fire, which triggered widespread outages across the country.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, says output has now reached about 70 percent of total capacity, with engineers working to bring the fifth and final units back online. He expressed optimism that full restoration could be achieved by the weekend, noting improved stability in the supply outlook.
An internal committee has been set up to investigate the cause of the fire, with findings expected within a week, while engineers from GRIDCo and the Volta River Authority continue round-the-clock work to fully stabilise electricity supply nationwide.
