The Zanzibar Utilities Regulatory Authority (ZURA) has completed a study tour of Nigeria’s electricity sector institutions aimed at enhancing regulatory cooperation and facilitating knowledge exchange on power sector governance.
The visit, which concluded on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, provided the ZURA delegation with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience of Nigeria’s evolving electricity market, regulatory system and institutional framework.
The Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Yusuf Ali, reaffirmed the importance of sustained collaboration between the two regulators and expressed NERC’s commitment to continuing knowledge-sharing initiatives under their existing cooperation arrangement.
During the tour, NERC coordinated engagements with several key stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), including a courtesy call on the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe.
The delegation also visited the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), where they participated in technical discussions with industry officials.
The sessions covered a range of topics, including Nigeria’s electricity market design, regulatory framework, renewable energy development, grid code compliance and the operation of the national electricity grid.
As part of the programme, the delegation toured the grid-connected rooftop solar mini-grid at Wuse Market in Abuja, examining the project as a possible model that could be adapted for implementation in Zanzibar.
The study tour forms part of NERC’s broader efforts to strengthen the capacity of electricity regulators across Africa while promoting closer regional cooperation and the exchange of regulatory best practices.
