A widespread power outage affected large parts of Kenya on Wednesday evening, disrupting electricity supply to thousands of customers across several regions, including Nairobi, the Coast, the Mt. Kenya region and parts of the Central Rift.
Electricity service, however, remained stable in sections of the North Rift and Western regions.
In a statement issued at 9:05 p.m. local time, Kenya Power confirmed the nationwide disruption but did not provide the cause of the outage.
The utility said the blackout had affected customers in multiple regions while noting that some areas in the North Rift and Western parts of the country continued to receive electricity.
Kenya Power said its technical teams had been deployed to restore supply to the affected areas as quickly as possible.
The company apologised for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their patience as restoration work continued.
Reports of the outage began surfacing shortly after 8:30 p.m., with electricity being interrupted almost simultaneously across several parts of the country.
The incident triggered widespread reactions on social media, where customers from Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret and other towns reported losing power at around the same time, suggesting that a substantial portion of Kenya’s national electricity grid had been affected.
Many customers used social media platforms to seek updates from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), while others expressed concern about the cause of the outage and the timeline for restoring electricity supply.
