TotalEnergies reports Angola oil find and expands exploration footprint

French energy major TotalEnergies has announced a new oil discovery in Angola and signed agreements to acquire a 40% operated interest in two additional exploration blocks, strengthening its position in the country’s oil sector.

The Acacia-5 discovery, made in June 2026 on Block 17 offshore Angola, is expected to add about 6,000 barrels per day to production, the company said on Thursday. TotalEnergies plans to fast-track the development, with first oil expected within three months of the discovery.

The company said the new production will help support output from Block 17, one of its key assets in Angola. The rapid development reflects TotalEnergies’ strategy of bringing new oil resources into production quickly while making use of existing infrastructure.

Separately, TotalEnergies has signed agreements with Angola’s National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANPG) to enter exploration Blocks 17/25 and 32/21 in the Lower Congo Basin.

TotalEnergies will hold a 40% operated interest in both blocks, giving it responsibility for leading exploration activities alongside its partners. The move expands the company’s exploration portfolio and provides opportunities to identify additional oil and gas resources in Angola.

The announcement comes a day after TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné said the company and its partners planned to invest $10 billion in Angola over the next five years.

The investment and new exploration agreements highlight TotalEnergies’ continued commitment to Angola, where it is seeking to maintain and increase oil production through new discoveries and developments.

The company is also pursuing faster project development as part of efforts to bring additional barrels to market and extend the life of its operations in the country.

Angola remains one of Africa’s major oil producers, and increased investment by international oil companies is important for sustaining production as mature fields decline and new resources are developed.

The latest discovery and exploration deals therefore reinforce TotalEnergies’ long-term strategy in Angola, combining near-term production growth from Acacia-5 with exploration activities aimed at securing future oil output.
