Togo, International Atomic Energy Agency Sign Five Year Deal to Expand Peaceful Nuclear Use

The Government of Togo has signed a five year cooperation agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency to promote the peaceful application of nuclear technologies in key sectors including health, agriculture and energy.

The agreement was signed in Vienna by Foreign Minister Robert Dussey and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and will run from 2026 to 2031.

Under the framework, the IAEA will assist Togo in deploying nuclear technologies in priority areas such as cancer treatment, food security and energy development. The partnership will also strengthen national capacity in research, training, regulation and technology management.

As part of its preparations, Togo established the Atomic Energy Commission in January 2025 and was elected to the IAEA Board of Governors in September 2025.

The cooperation arrangement is also expected to address gaps in legal and regulatory systems, nuclear safety, radiation protection and funding. The IAEA will provide ongoing technical and institutional support to facilitate the implementation of Togo’s nuclear policy.
