Springfield Exploration & Production (E&P) has achieved significant success in appraising its Afina oil discovery offshore Ghana, with recent drill stem test results from the West Cape Three Points Block 2 (WCTP 2) exceeding initial expectations.
This discovery has been central to an ongoing dispute between Springfield and Eni since April 2020, when the Ghanaian government directed both companies to unitise the Afina field with Eni’s producing Sankofa field. Eni contended that discussions on unitisation were premature, citing the need for further appraisal drilling by Springfield.
A ruling from an international tribunal in July declared that the Ghanaian government lacked the authority to enforce such a unitisation agreement. Springfield’s latest appraisal results bolster its position in the dispute, indicating the potential value of the Afina field. This development is expected to influence negotiations and future operations in the region.
The successful appraisal marks a crucial step for Springfield as it seeks to capitalize on its discovery while navigating regulatory challenges. Overall, the positive results enhance prospects for both the company and Ghana’s oil sector.
