Sola Group Launches Africa’s First Multi-Buyer Virtual Wheeling Solar Plant in South Africa

Sola Group, a leading renewable energy company in South Africa, has officially commissioned the Springbok Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Plant, marking the start of full commercial operations at what is being hailed as Africa’s first multi-buyer virtual wheeling project.

The milestone project, located in Springbok, Northern Cape, represents Sola Group’s largest renewable energy development to date, underscoring the company’s expanding role in advancing clean energy solutions across the continent.

The commissioning took place following the resolution of a dispute between Sola Group and Renergen, a natural gas and helium producer that previously held interests in the Springbok site. The settlement cleared the way for the project’s successful operational launch.

According to company representatives, the Springbok PV plant will enable multiple corporate buyers to access renewable power through South Africa’s national grid, using the virtual wheeling model a system that allows energy to be credited digitally rather than physically transmitted to each consumer.

This innovation is expected to boost energy efficiency and accessibility, providing a scalable solution to South Africa’s ongoing energy challenges while reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability.

The project is also seen as a blueprint for future renewable energy collaborations across Africa, demonstrating how technology and policy integration can drive progress in the clean power sector.

Industry experts have lauded the launch as a transformative step toward diversifying South Africa’s energy mix and supporting the nation’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

By commissioning the Springbok plant, Sola Group reaffirms its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and energy independence, positioning South Africa as a regional leader in renewable power development.
