Petrol, Diesel Prices Set to Rise from September 1

Motorists in Ghana will pay more for petrol and diesel starting September 1, 2026, following new price floor figures released by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), the country’s downstream petroleum regulator.

The updated figures show the price floor for petrol rising from GH¢13.92 to GH¢14.53 per litre, an increase of roughly 4.38%, while diesel’s price floor has gone up from GH¢15.19 to GH¢15.60 per litre, a rise of about 2.69%. In contrast, the price floor for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has dropped slightly, from GH¢10.98 to GH¢10.85 per kilogramme.

In its notice, the NPA cautioned Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), LPG Marketing Companies (LPGMCs), and other industry players against selling below the approved price floors during the current pricing window.

The authority noted, however, that these floors do not factor in premiums charged by International Oil Trading Companies (IOTCs), the operating margins of Bulk Import, Distribution and Export Companies (BIDECs), or the margins applied by OMC and LPGMC dealers. All of these are set independently by the companies under the Petroleum Products Pricing Formula (PPPF).

The price adjustments come as refined petroleum products have grown more expensive on the international market over the past two pricing windows, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East.

NPA data shows the global price of petrol climbing from $1,034.12 to $1,126.59 per metric tonne, diesel rising from $1,250.24 to $1,319.11 per metric tonne, and LPG increasing from $596.63 to $616.39 per metric tonne.
