Mexican state oil company Pemex has completed the permanent closure of the Krem-1 exploratory well in Veracruz, nearly five months after an accident triggered a fire and sustained natural gas flaring, the company said on Sunday.
The well, located near Las Choapas in the eastern state of Veracruz, no longer has any surface flow, marking the end of emergency containment efforts following the March incident.
The accident drew environmental concerns after a researcher estimated that about 300 million cubic metres of natural gas were burned between March and July, highlighting the scale of the emissions.
Pemex said it will continue environmental remediation, compensation and repair programmes in coordination with government authorities and nearby communities affected by the incident.
The company also pledged to maintain medical services for residents in more than 45 surrounding communities while field teams continue assessing and documenting the impact of the accident.
