Nigeria Slashes Power Supply to Niger by 42 Percent amid Energy Crisis

Nigeria has reduced electricity exports to Niger Republic from 80 megawatts to 46 megawatts, a 42% cut, following regional sanctions against the Niger junta. This decision, made by Nigeria’s government, comes after the July 2023 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. Niger’s Energy Minister, Haoua Amadou, stated that the reduction has caused a significant drop in the country’s electricity production, resulting in planned power outages, particularly in the capital, Niamey.
