At least eight people were killed and dozens injured in missile, drone and shelling attacks across Russian and Ukrainian territories within the last 24 hours, authorities on both sides said on Monday, as fighting intensified amid the prolonged war.
In Russian-controlled Horlivka in eastern Ukraine, four people, including two teenagers, died in strikes local officials blamed on Ukrainian forces. Separately, Russia’s Belgorod region reported one death and another injury after attacks disrupted electricity and water supplies.
Ukraine said Russian attacks killed two people and wounded 16 others in the southern Kherson region, while another strike near Derhachi outside Kharkiv left one person dead and two injured. Additional attacks in Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia wounded eight people, including a six-year-old child.
Emergency responders reported a drone strike hit a residential building in Pavlohrad, sending thick smoke into the air. Reuters could not independently verify battlefield claims from either side.
The renewed attacks follow one of Russia’s heaviest bombardments of Kyiv in recent months and Moscow’s pledge to retaliate over an alleged Ukrainian drone strike in Russian-controlled Luhansk, accusations Kyiv has denied.
With U.S.-led mediation efforts yet to produce a breakthrough, both Moscow and Kyiv accuse each other of escalating the conflict, while Ukraine prepares reinforcements amid concerns over a potential new Russian offensive in northern regions.
