Mineworkers’ Union Praises Heath Goldfields for Debt Settlement

The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) has expressed commendation for Heath Goldfields Ltd., the current operator of the Bogoso-Prestea Gold Mine, for settling approximately GHC80 million of the debts owed to workers. This payment, made in November 2024 following the issuance of mining leases by the Government of Ghana, fulfills a key condition for lease grants and provides much-needed relief to affected employees and their families.

Despite facing legal challenges that sought to impede the company’s investment plans, Heath Goldfields successfully addressed the legacy debt left by the former leaseholder. The union also praised the company for assembling a capable team of young Ghanaian mining professionals committed to revitalizing the Bogoso-Prestea asset for the benefit of all stakeholders.

In light of these developments, the GMWU has pledged its full support to the new management in settling remaining debts and transforming the mine into a world-class operation. The union is calling on the Government of Ghana, regulatory agencies, local chiefs, and the communities of Bogoso and Prestea to support these turnaround efforts under Heath Goldfields’ management, fostering collaboration for a brighter future in the mining sector.
