Mauritania Expands Energy Access with Domestic Gas Monetization Plan

Mauritania is leveraging its offshore gas reserves, particularly from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) field, to boost electricity access and transition from heavy fuel oil to cleaner energy. The GTA field, operated by bp and Kosmos Energy, holds an estimated 424.75 billion m³ of gas, with 20-25% allocated for domestic power generation. Two new gas-fired IPP projects, totaling 550 MW, will supply the national grid, supporting Mauritania’s goal of universal electricity access by 2030.

Beyond GTA, the BirAllah and Banda gas fields are key to industrial growth and regional integration. BirAllah, with 2,265 billion m³ in reserves, is seeking new development partners after bp’s exit, targeting a 2025 investment decision. Meanwhile, the Banda and Tevet fields will supply gas to a 300 MW power expansion, reinforcing energy access for households and industries.

The government has fully privatized power generation to attract investment and improve energy security. These initiatives will be highlighted at the MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power 2025 conference in Dakar (December 9–10), a key platform for partnerships.
