In a landmark move towards renewable energy adoption, Lumen Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Huawei Ghana to deploy solar power systems across 4,000 Catholic institutions nationwide. The agreement, signed on October 14 at the National Catholic Secretariat in Accra, marks a significant milestone under the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference Renewable Energy Project.
The initiative aims to promote sustainable energy solutions while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to cut down carbon emissions and foster environmental responsibility. Under the MoU, Huawei will act as the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), supplying advanced solar technology for all installations across the country.
Beyond providing equipment, Huawei will offer free capacity-building programs to train installers, technicians, and maintenance staff—empowering local communities and creating jobs for the youth within beneficiary dioceses. The company will also extend continuous technical and operational support throughout the lifespan of the project to ensure long-term efficiency and sustainability.
As the implementing partner, Lumen Energy, owned by the National Catholic Secretariat, will lead the project rollout and supervise the commissioning process in collaboration with Catholic Church institutions across Ghana.
During the signing ceremony, His Lordship Bishop Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, SVD, Board Chair of Lumen Energy, highlighted the Church’s moral responsibility to care for creation through clean energy initiatives. He emphasized that the project not only supports environmental conservation but also offers a platform to build local capacity and create sustainable employment for young Ghanaians.
CEO of Lumen Energy, Mr. Victor Awumee, assured that the initiative would be completed within 18 months, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to the Bishops’ Conference’s renewable energy vision.
On behalf of Huawei, Bob Wang, Director of the Digital Power Business Department, expressed the company’s enthusiasm to support Ghana’s transition to a greener and more sustainable future, citing Huawei’s high-performance and reliable solar technologies as key to achieving the project’s goals.
This partnership stands as a model of faith-driven sustainability—uniting technology, spirituality, and environmental stewardship to illuminate thousands of Catholic institutions across Ghana with clean, renewable energy.
