The Western Nzema Traditional Council (WNTC) has praised President Mahama’s call to fast-track the Jomoro Petroleum Hub project but seeks clarity on his proposal to reduce the initial land allocation from 20,000 acres to 5,000 hectares. Speaking at their Annual General Meeting in Benyin on August 8, 2025, chiefs expressed concern that downsizing the project could hinder future expansion and allow private developers to encroach on reserved land.
Chiefs Urge Government to Honor Original Plan
Nana Avo Nwia, Chief of Tikobo Number 2, emphasized that the council fully supports the 20,000-acre plan, which promises thousands of jobs and economic growth, but worries that phased development starting with a smaller footprint may disrupt long-term goals. He called for prompt compensation to affected landowners and a direct dialogue with the President to align expectations.
Government Assures Commitment Amid Land Concerns
Dr. Toni Aubynn, Acting CEO of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, defended Mahama’s stance, explaining that the redesign aims to accelerate progress amid local disputes over land size. He stressed the President’s focus on job creation and energy security, urging chiefs to view the adjustment as a pragmatic step toward eventual expansion. The meeting, attended by MPs, municipal leaders, and industry reps, highlighted the project’s pivotal role in regional development.
