Government Terminates $227M ECG Contracts to Enhance Accountability and Cut Costs

On July 16, 2025, Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Jinapor, announced the cancellation of 202 supply contracts awarded to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

This announcement was made during the second edition of the Government Accountability Series in Accra, as part of a broader campaign to improve transparency in the energy sector.

The terminated contracts, worth about $227.6 million, £1.17 million, and €4.08 million, were scrapped after suppliers failed to meet delivery timelines.

Following a comprehensive review of 347 contracts, the ECG Board approved the cancellations to reduce financial liabilities and tighten procurement control.

An additional 145 contracts are still under evaluation and may also be revoked depending on the outcome of ongoing performance reviews.

Dr. Jinapor emphasized that this move is critical to ensuring value for money and eliminating inefficiencies within ECG’s procurement processes.

The initiative reflects the government’s resolve to address waste, strengthen institutional oversight, and promote accountability in public utilities.

It also highlights the Energy Ministry’s broader strategy to reform Ghana’s power sector and build a more efficient, financially sustainable energy system.

Stakeholders were urged to align with the new procurement discipline to support the country’s energy security and economic growth.

Overall, the cancellations mark a significant step toward restoring public confidence and enforcing fiscal responsibility in the electricity distribution sector.
