The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to expanding renewable energy deployment, announcing plans to scale the country’s solar generation capacity to 1,000 megawatts.
In a Facebook post, Dr Jinapor said government is already implementing a 200MW competitive solar tender as part of efforts to increase renewable energy penetration and strengthen the country’s energy mix.
He explained that the long-term plan includes the deployment of solar-plus-storage technologies to improve power reliability, address growing energy demand and support a more resilient electricity system.
The Minister also disclosed plans to roll out 50,000 home solar systems and develop solar-powered electric vehicle charging infrastructure to accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions across the country.
Dr Jinapor stressed that Africa’s energy transition must go beyond emissions reduction and create opportunities for industrialisation, improved electricity access and sustainable economic development. He said the continent must pursue a transition pathway that balances climate objectives with development needs.
