Vivo Energy Ghana PLC, the exclusive distributor and marketer of Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in Ghana, has reaffirmed its commitment to safety, emergency preparedness and operational excellence at its 2026 Safety Day and Awards celebration held at the Airport City Shell service station in Accra.
Held under the theme “Prepare to Respond,” the event brought together employees, regulators, industry leaders, business partners, media representatives and other stakeholders to promote stronger safety practices across the company’s operations and value chain.
Safety remains a key concern across the petroleum industry, particularly as operators manage risks associated with the transportation, storage and distribution of petroleum products.
Recent engagements involving the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) have also drawn attention to challenges such as tanker accidents, fuel siphoning at accident scenes and the need to strengthen safety standards across Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.
Against this backdrop, Vivo Energy Ghana’s annual Safety Day provides an opportunity for the company to reinforce its focus on Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality (HSSEQ), while promoting vigilance, accountability and emergency preparedness.
This year’s theme emphasised the need for employees, systems and processes to be adequately prepared to respond quickly and effectively when emergencies occur.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Christian Li, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, said safety remains central to the company’s operations and is guided by its core values of Safety, Excellence, Caring, Respect and Integrity.
He noted that the company has recorded more than 5,600 Goal Zero days without harm, reflecting its continued focus on maintaining a strong safety culture.
“The future of safety will not be defined by luck, but by preparation. Safety does not happen by accident; it is deliberate, disciplined and a collective responsibility,” Mr. Li said.
The Special Guest of Honour, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), commended Vivo Energy Ghana for its safety and environmental stewardship efforts.
She stressed that effective preparedness should go beyond emergency response to include prevention, regulatory compliance, vigilance and environmental protection, particularly within the petroleum industry where operations can affect ecosystems, water resources, public health and surrounding communities.
“Preparing to respond means preparing to prevent. Together, by fostering a culture of compliance, vigilance and safety, we can protect our people, preserve our environment and secure a sustainable future for generations to come,” she said.
In a goodwill message, Mr. Gabriel Kumi, Board Chairman of COMAC, praised Vivo Energy Ghana for its efforts to promote safer and more responsible industry practices.
He said effective safety management requires strong leadership, sound systems, continuous learning and the active participation of all stakeholders.
“Safety remains a shared responsibility, and our actions, decisions, inactions and preparedness can make a meaningful difference when situations demand a response,” he noted.
The celebration also featured a panel discussion involving representatives from the Ghana National Fire Service, COMAC, transporters and retailers, who shared perspectives on emergency preparedness and safety within the downstream petroleum sector.
The event concluded with the Safety Awards ceremony, which recognised employees, transporters, contractors and retailers who demonstrated outstanding commitment to safety and operational discipline.
The awardees were recognised for their vigilance, leadership and dedication to Vivo Energy Ghana’s Goal Zero ambition and the continued strengthening of the company’s safety culture.
