The government is planning to add more than 1,000 megawatts of power generation capacity in Kumasi as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s energy infrastructure and support industrial expansion, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has said.
He explained that Kumasi is steadily emerging as a strategic energy and commercial hub due to its geographic location and growing economic activity. According to him, the city is well positioned to play a central role in Ghana’s industrialisation drive as new energy investments take shape.
Speaking during an engagement in Kumasi, Dr Jinapor said the planned capacity addition reflects the government’s broader agenda to expand infrastructure and deepen industrial development. He noted that the scale of ongoing and planned projects in the city underscores its rising importance in the national energy landscape.
“Kumasi is becoming not just a commercial hub, it is becoming an energy industrial hub. Very soon, we are going to have more than 1,000 megawatts situated here in Kumasi. So it’s a strategic location,” he said, adding that several interventions are already underway, even if not all are publicly highlighted.
