Ghana experienced a nationwide blackout on Wednesday morning after a significant disturbance occurred on the Interconnected Transmission System, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) Ltd has confirmed.
According to GRIDCo, the incident occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m. (0311 GMT) and was caused by the simultaneous shutdown of multiple generating plants within the national power system.
The grid operator explained that the failure of several generation units led to a widespread interruption of electricity supply across the country.
GRIDCo said it immediately commenced its established system restoration procedures, with engineers and system operators working alongside other stakeholders in the power sector to restore electricity in a safe and coordinated manner.
The company added that a detailed technical assessment has been initiated to establish the exact cause of the disturbance and identify any factors that may have contributed to the system failure.
GRIDCo apologised to customers for the disruption and expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and understanding during the restoration process.
The company assured the public that it remains committed to restoring power supply to all affected areas as quickly and safely as possible, adding that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
