EU Launches Plan to Accelerate Small Modular Nuclear Reactors

The European Commission has unveiled a strategy to accelerate the development of Small Modular Reactors and Advanced Modular Reactors across the European Union, with the first projects expected in the early 2030s.

In a press release issued March 10, the Commission said the plan aims to coordinate governments, industry and investors to fast-track nuclear innovation and avoid fragmentation. Projections in the Commission’s Nuclear Illustrative Programme indicate SMR capacity in the EU could reach between 17 and 53 gigawatts by 2050, with total nuclear investments estimated at about 241 billion euros.
