The European Union has announced a major €545 million ($638 million) investment package aimed at accelerating renewable energy development across Africa. The initiative, revealed by the European Commission, is designed to expand electrification, modernize power grids, and enhance access to clean and affordable energy.
Under the new program, Côte d’Ivoire will receive €359.4 million to construct a high-voltage power line that will strengthen regional energy distribution and cross-border connectivity. Cameroon will benefit from €59.1 million to support rural electrification projects, while €45.5 million is allocated to Somalia to widen access to renewable and affordable energy sources.
The EU emphasized that the funding represents a strategic commitment to helping African nations transition toward sustainable power systems. Despite the continent’s immense renewable energy potential, approximately 600 million people still lack access to electricity.
According to the European Commission, these investments are expected to play a key role in tackling energy poverty, driving economic growth, and supporting environmental sustainability. The renewable sector, the statement added, could generate up to 38 million green jobs across Africa by 2030, marking a significant step toward a more inclusive and resilient energy future.
