The European Union has announced a new round of tough sanctions on Russia intensifying pressure over its ongoing war in Ukraine. The latest measures include a lower price cap on Russian oil, a ban on transactions involving the Nord Stream gas pipelines, and new restrictions targeting ships in Russia’s so-called shadow fleet fleet used to evade restrictions.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas says the move sends a clear message: Europe will not relent in its support for Ukraine. The sanction is also moving to block any future revenue Russia could earn from the damaged Nord Stream pipelines by discouraging investment. Russian oil giant Rosneft’s refinery operations in India is among the latest target. While the Nord Stream pipelines were sabotaged in 2022 and remain inactive, their fate continues to symbolize the geopolitical fallout from the war.
