Ethiopia Pushes ‘Made-in-Ethiopia’ Energy Drive to Cut Import Dependence

Ethiopia has launched a major initiative to localise energy technology production as part of efforts to reduce reliance on imported power solutions and strengthen energy security.

The Ministry of Innovation and Technology announced the move in partnership with China Southern Power Grid Technology and EDAN Power Group, marking a new phase in Ethiopia’s push toward domestically manufactured energy systems.

Speaking at the launch, State Minister of Innovation and Technology, Baysa Bedada, said reliable electricity is central to Ethiopia’s digital and economic transformation, stressing that energy infrastructure is no longer optional but essential for national development.

He noted that the partnership will support local manufacturing of modern energy technologies, promote technology transfer, and build domestic capacity to meet the country’s rapidly growing power demand. The initiative will also integrate renewable energy sources and mini-grid systems alongside the national grid to support businesses and entrepreneurs across the country.

EDAN Power Group CEO Endris Adem said the collaboration would enhance national energy security through expanded renewable energy supply, accelerated digitalisation, and stronger stakeholder participation, in line with Ethiopia’s National Electrification Program and Digital Ethiopia 2030 agenda.

China Southern Power Grid Technology’s Board Secretary, Zhao Ziyi, said the partnership would adapt advanced Chinese power technologies to Ethiopia’s local conditions, including modern grid systems and energy storage solutions.

Officials said the initiative places strong emphasis on sustainability, skills development, and long-term technology transfer, with government support aimed at building a competitive domestic energy industry.
