The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to implement flexible payment arrangements for customers struggling to settle outstanding bills.
The directive was issued on Saturday, October 11, 2025, during the official commissioning of electrification projects covering 13 communities in the Central Gonja District of the Savanna Region. The initiative forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to expand electricity access and promote fairness in energy service delivery.
Hon. Jinapor emphasized that while NEDCo must show consideration for customers who make regular payments, the company should also ensure that those in arrears are given manageable payment options to clear their debts gradually without undue hardship.
The minister, however, cautioned that the government will not tolerate illegal power connections or deliberate non-payment of electricity bills, warning that such practices threaten the sustainability and stability of Ghana’s power sector.
He commended NEDCo staff for their progress in loss reduction and revenue improvement measures, noting that recent initiatives have increased revenue collection by about 10 percent. Hon. Jinapor encouraged the workforce to maintain high standards of professionalism and respect in their interactions with the public.
The directive comes in the wake of public protests in Tamale on October 10, 2025, where over a hundred residents demonstrated against NEDCo over concerns of unfair billing, nighttime disconnections, and the deployment of military personnel during operations.
Hon. Jinapor’s statement reflects the government’s intent to balance accountability with compassion, ensuring that utility providers recover revenues while protecting consumers from undue hardship.
He reaffirmed that the Ministry of Energy remains committed to transparent, customer-focused electricity management, which supports both economic growth and social equity.
By promoting collaboration and fairness, the minister seeks to strengthen public confidence in the power sector and ensure equitable access to energy for all Ghanaians.
