Energy Minister Directs GRIDCo CEO to Step Aside After Akosombo Fire

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, to step aside pending investigations into a fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.

The incident, which affected critical control systems at the facility, has significantly disrupted power transmission and contributed to widespread electricity outages across the country. Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of damage to key infrastructure.

The Minister’s directive is intended to ensure an independent and transparent probe, as part of efforts to stabilise the national grid. In a related development, leadership changes have also been made within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region, as part of broader operational reforms in the sector.

Government says it remains committed to restoring stable power supply, with the Minister expected to provide further updates on ongoing interventions and sector reforms during a press briefing scheduled for Monday afternoon.
