Egypt Signs 5.6GW Renewable Energy and Battery Storage Projects Deal

Egypt has signed multiple power purchase agreements totalling 5,620MW of renewable energy and battery storage capacity, in a major push to expand its clean energy infrastructure and diversify its electricity mix.

The agreements were concluded between the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and several private sector investors, with the signing witnessed by Electricity Minister Dr. Mahmoud Esmat.

Among the key projects is the 900MW Ras Shukeir wind farm, which will be developed by a consortium made up of Orascom Construction, Engie, and a subsidiary of Toyota Tsusho. The deal also includes a land-use agreement to support project execution.

In addition, agreements were signed with United Egypt Group for National Industries (Kemet) for several large-scale solar and storage developments. These include a 2GW solar park in Naga Hammadi, which will be paired with a standalone battery storage system capable of 2,000MWh.

Kemet will also develop two additional solar plants in El-Oweinat with capacities of 320MW and 400MW respectively. These projects had previously received government approval in February, paving the way for the formal power offtake agreements.

Overall, the agreements represent a significant milestone in Egypt’s renewable energy expansion strategy, reinforcing its ambition to build a more sustainable and diversified power sector.
