Egypt, APPO Strengthen Cooperation on African Energy Projects

Egypt and the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO) have held discussions aimed at expanding cooperation in Africa’s oil gas and energy sectors while promoting stronger regional integration across the continent.

The talks were held in Cairo on Monday May 11 2026 between Egypt’s Minister for Petroleum and Mineral Resources Eng. Karim Badawi and APPO Secretary General Eng. Farid Ghezali.

During the meeting Eng. Badawi reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the Trans Saharan Gas Pipeline project and stressed the importance of involving Egyptian national oil companies in future APPO programmes forums and technical training initiatives.

He also proposed that APPO organise a ministerial meeting together with a gathering of chief executives of national oil companies in El Alamein during the Alamein Africa Forum scheduled for June 25 to 27 2026 following the annual African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) meeting set for June 21 to 24.

According to Eng. Badawi African countries must work more closely together to address financing and infrastructure challenges facing the continent’s energy sector.

He noted that Africa possesses enormous energy resources and opportunities that can only be fully developed through stronger collaboration and knowledge sharing among member states. The discussions also focused on progress toward the establishment of the African Energy Bank which is expected to finance oil and gas projects across Africa.

Both parties exchanged views on the next steps toward launching the bank and its expected role in supporting the continent’s energy development agenda.

The meeting further explored opportunities for cooperation in training and capacity building programmes using Egypt’s technical expertise to support skills development within the African energy industry.

Eng. Badawi highlighted the capabilities of Egyptian oil and gas infrastructure companies including Enppi Petrojet and IPR as well as other Egyptian and international drilling firms that have executed major projects both locally and internationally.

For his part Eng. Ghezali praised Egypt’s continued support for APPO activities and commended the country’s advanced energy infrastructure and internationally recognised companies.

He added that APPO looks forward to strengthening cooperation with Egypt and other member countries particularly in the areas of training technical knowledge transfer and capacity development.
