ECG Restores Power to Kumasi Following Major Outage

Electricity supply has been fully restored to Kumasi and surrounding areas after a widespread outage on Monday, February 9, 2026, that left homes, businesses, and key intersections in darkness.

Speaking on the Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9 FM, Collins Manu, Head of Public Relations for Ashanti Sub Transmission at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), said the utility worked closely with stakeholders to ensure swift restoration. He expressed regret for the disruption and thanked customers for their patience.

“The company is making continuous investments in critical power infrastructure including bulk supply points, high voltage transmission lines, substations, transformers, distribution networks, and customer metering systems to ensure safe, reliable, and quality electricity nationwide,” Mr Manu stated. He emphasized that ongoing maintenance and system upgrades are strengthening ECG’s network to meet growing demand and support Ghana’s development agenda.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) confirmed that a fault on some transmission lines caused interruptions to parts of the Northern, Middle, and Western regions. The disturbance, which occurred on Monday around 3:16 p.m., affected sections of the national transmission network. Swift restoration efforts ensured that the National Interconnected Transmission System was fully back online by 8:09 p.m.

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) assured the public that measures are continuously being implemented to enhance the resilience and reliability of the transmission network and apologized for the inconvenience caused, thanking the public for their understanding and patience.
