EAGB completes benchmarking mission in The Gambia to enhance energy collaboration

The Water and Electricity Company of Guinea-Bissau (EAGB) has concluded a three day benchmarking visit to The Gambia as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation and share knowledge within the region’s energy sector.

During the mission, the delegation engaged with the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), focusing on collaboration opportunities, operational experience sharing, and learning from neighbouring utilities to support sector development.

Managing Director of NAWEC, Gallo Saidy, highlighted the importance of regional collaboration, stressing that progress depends on mutual learning, support, and strong partnerships among utilities.

The EAGB team expressed appreciation for the reception and described the visit as a valuable platform to gain insights into best practices and strengthen technical cooperation.

Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration and advancing sustainable energy development goals across the sub region.

As part of the visit, the delegation, together with the Guinea Bissau Ambassador to The Gambia and NAWEC officials, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Petroleum, Energy and Mines, Nani Juwara.

During the engagement, Minister Juwara outlined the progress made by NAWEC in areas such as metering, commercial operations, network expansion, and the adoption of modern technologies.

He noted that The Gambia has achieved about 90 percent national electricity access and commended EAGB for choosing the country as a reference point for learning and collaboration.

The minister also emphasised the strong bilateral ties between The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, noting that such engagements help strengthen regional cooperation and open new avenues for partnership.

The EAGB delegation also outlined its interest in understanding how NAWEC manages network challenges, addresses commercial inefficiencies, and operates its production and distribution systems under similar conditions.

Throughout the visit, the team held technical discussions and toured key operational facilities.

The mission is expected to further strengthen cooperation between the two utilities and reinforce energy sector collaboration between the two countries.
