China’s Clean Energy Boom Cuts Fossil Fuel Use for First Time

China’s rapid expansion of clean energy is beginning to cut into its reliance on fossil fuels, according to new research by global energy think tank Ember. Renewables supplied over 80 percent of new electricity demand in 2024. In the first half of 2025, clean power met all additional demand, resulting in a 2 percent decrease in fossil fuel use compared to the same period last year.

As the world’s largest emitter, China has invested heavily in solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles, and other clean technologies. Analysts say this not only lowers domestic emissions but also reduces global costs and boosts exports to other fast-growing economies, strengthening China’s role in the global clean energy transition.
