Algeria, Syria Strengthen Energy Ties with New Cooperation Plan

Algeria has announced plans to support Syria’s struggling electricity sector through a comprehensive cooperation roadmap. The move follows high-level talks between Algeria’s Energy and Mining Minister, Mohamed Arkab, and Syria’s energy chief, Mohammed al-Bashir.

In a statement, Algeria’s Ministry of Energy and Mining revealed that a team of experts from state utility Sonelgaz will be deployed to Syria. Their mission: assess the country’s electricity challenges and draft a plan to boost power generation, improve infrastructure, and maintain critical equipment.

As part of the support package, Algeria will also train Syrian engineers and technicians at Sonelgaz’s specialized institutes, promoting skills transfer and long-term capacity building.

Both nations also pledged to deepen ties in hydrocarbons, mining, and renewables, with a focus on launching tangible and sustainable joint projects. Syria currently produces only 1,500 megawatts of power, well below the 7,000 megawatts needed, due to years of conflict, sanctions, and fuel shortages.
