South Africa’s state-owned power utility, Eskom, has confirmed that Unit 1 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station has returned to service following a turbine-related shutdown.
The unit was brought back online at about 0300 GMT on Monday after being safely taken out of operation on Thursday following a turbine trip.
Eskom said electricity supply and grid stability were maintained throughout the incident, with sufficient generation capacity available to support the national grid during the outage.
The utility said all plant monitoring systems indicated that operating conditions remained stable during the event.
“Nuclear safety was never compromised and there was no risk to employees, the public or the environment,” Eskom said in an earlier statement.
According to the utility, Koeberg’s protection and monitoring systems operated as designed, ensuring the safe shutdown of the unit.
Eskom also assured the public that the temporary removal of Unit 1 from the grid did not threaten South Africa’s electricity supply, as the national power system remained stable and secure.
Unit 1 was last taken offline for major maintenance, which was completed in October 2025.
