Shell–Petrobras Complete Falcão-1 Well Offshore São Tomé and Príncipe with No Commercial Discovery

Drilling operations at the Falcão-1 well in Block 10, offshore São Tomé and Príncipe, have been completed safely, the National Petroleum Agency and the Shell/Petrobras consortium announced.

Although the well did not yield commercially viable hydrocarbons, the partners said it provided valuable geological data on the basin, which will inform future exploration. “This information is very useful and will be integrated into subsequent analyses for the next stages of exploration in the basin,” they stated.

Block 10, located in deep waters off São Tomé and Príncipe, is operated by Shell in partnership with Petrobras under the supervision of the National Petroleum Agency. The consortium noted that while offshore exploration carries high risk, it is strategically important for understanding the country’s petroleum potential and attracting long-term investment.

Data from Falcão-1—including insights on reservoir characteristics, source rock presence, and basin structure—will help refine exploration strategies and reduce geological uncertainty for future drilling campaigns.
