Russia Backs Ethiopia’s Push for Nuclear Energy as Key to Expanding Power and Boosting Development

Russian Ambassador Evgeny Terekhin reaffirmed Russia’s strong support for Ethiopia’s plan to build a nuclear power plant, calling it a vital step toward diversifying the nation’s energy mix. he praised Ethiopia’s efforts to expand electricity access and strengthen its energy portfolio.

Terekhin highlighted the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as an “incredible achievement” that reflects the resilience and long-term vision of the Ethiopian people.

He stressed that nuclear energy is essential for meeting Ethiopia’s rapidly growing power demands and ensuring sustainable national development.

According to the ambassador, expanding and diversifying energy sources—including nuclear power—will give Ethiopia the capacity to support industrial growth and modern infrastructure.

He noted that Ethiopia and Russia have signed several cooperative agreements in nuclear technology, forming the backbone of their expanding bilateral partnership.

Terekhin also pointed to the recent meeting between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Vladimir Putin during Russian Atomic Week, where both sides approved a joint action plan to construct Ethiopia’s first nuclear plant.

This nuclear project, he added, is one of Ethiopia’s most strategic mega-developments, reflecting the country’s ambition to strengthen energy security and future-proof its economic progress.
