President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday commissioned a new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier in South Korea, describing the vessel as a strategic investment aimed at strengthening Ghana’s energy security and supporting the shift toward cleaner fuel across West Africa.
The commissioning ceremony, held at a major South Korean shipyard, marked the launch of the MT Asharami Ghana, a state-of-the-art dual-fuel, fully refrigerated LPG carrier designed to transport large volumes of gas safely and efficiently.
Speaking at the event attended by industry leaders, partners and dignitaries, president Mahama said the vessel represented more than the addition of a single ship, calling it a milestone in expanding the infrastructure that supports the global LPG supply chain.
He noted that countries such as Ghana, which currently imports part of its LPG supply to complement domestic production, require stronger shipping capacity to ensure reliable supply, improve logistics efficiency and stabilize prices.
President Mahama said the project was delivered through a collaboration involving West Africa Gas Limited (WAGL) Energy and other partners, adding that the vessel would support a growing regional fleet designed to meet West Africa’s evolving energy needs.
The president stressed that LPG plays a key role in the global transition to cleaner energy, particularly in Africa where millions of households still rely on charcoal, firewood and kerosene for cooking.
He said increased LPG access could help reduce indoor air pollution, improve public health and curb environmental degradation linked to deforestation.
President Mahama also noted that Ghana currently produces about half of its LPG requirements locally and imports the remainder, making reliable maritime transport essential for maintaining steady supplies.
He commended Sahara Group, WAGL Energy and other partners for their investment and technical expertise, saying their collaboration demonstrated how international partnerships could help bridge infrastructure gaps.
President Mahama said the MT Asharami Ghana would enhance the safe and large-scale movement of LPG to businesses, industries and households while encouraging further investment and cooperation across Africa’s energy sector.
