Perseus Mining (Ghana) Limited has announced its decision to relinquish a 70-hectare section of its Ayanfuri Mining Lease to the Government of Ghana for the Small-Scale Cooperative Mining Scheme. This initiative, located near Ayanfuri in the Upper Denkyira District, aims to empower local communities by enabling them to form cooperatives and apply for mining licenses.
The agreement reflects a strong partnership between Perseus and the Ghanaian government, as highlighted by Managing Director Jeff Quartermaine. He noted that this move follows a US$5 million dividend payment made to the government in December 2024, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable development in the region.
Additionally, Perseus has pledged US$1.428 million toward future rehabilitation of the relinquished area, emphasizing responsible mining practices and environmental stewardship. The company has been actively involved in supporting Ghana’s national development priorities and combating illegal mining, which poses threats to local resources.
Since beginning operations at the Edikan Gold Mine in 2011, Perseus has contributed to local infrastructure and livelihood projects through the Edikan Trust Fund, increasing annual funding to US$500,000 in 2024 to support additional nearby villages.
Moreover, Perseus has made significant contributions through local employment initiatives, community support, and taxes, royalties, and dividends to local governments, amounting to over US$286 million in FY24 alone. This land donation marks another step in Perseus’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and responsible mining in Ghana.
