The National Petroleum Authority (NPA), led by CEO Edudzi Tameklo, has promised a transparent and scientifically grounded review of public concerns over a proposed Star Oil fuel station in Hofedo, Ho, in Ghana’s Volta Region. This assurance came during a stakeholder engagement held on Thursday, June 5, 2025, in Hofedo, a community increasingly uneasy about the safety of the station’s location.
The NPA initiated the in-person dialogue after learning of the situation through media reports and sought to directly hear the views of residents, traditional leaders, and regulatory agencies.
Locals voiced worries over environmental risks, fire hazards, and general public safety, prompting the NPA to consider enhanced monitoring and environmental assessment procedures.
He reassured residents that safety and transparency are top priorities, adding that any final decision will reflect both technical evidence and the community’s welfare. The meeting included representatives from the Ghana National Fire Service, NADMO, and the Municipal Planning Office, ensuring a holistic review of the project’s impact.
The company’s COO, Selorm Tetteh Quapepu, pledged strict adherence to national and international safety standards and vowed to maintain open collaboration with local stakeholders.
Abel Youngs, speaking on behalf of the community, thanked the NPA for engaging directly but emphasized that development should never come at the cost of public safety. Residents expressed cautious optimism, noting that the NPA’s visible involvement and commitment to due process had restored some confidence in the regulatory system.
The NPA confirmed that an investigative team’s findings will inform the path forward, promising that Hofedo’s safety will not be compromised in any final decision.
