Nigeria: Energy ministers advance plans for West African Gas Pipeline expansion

The Committee of Ministers overseeing the West African Gas Pipeline convened in Abuja, reaffirming its strategic role in shaping West Africa’s regional energy agenda.

The meeting brought together ministers and senior representatives from Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Ghana, alongside officials from the Economic Community of West African States, the West African Gas Pipeline Authority, and the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited.

Opening the session, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Gas, Rt Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, reiterated the country’s commitment to sustaining and expanding the pipeline.

He disclosed that since its launch, the pipeline has delivered over 613 million MMBtu of natural gas, with Nigeria contributing more than 68 percent of total supplies to Benin, Togo, and Ghana.

Also speaking, Executive Vice President for Gas, Power and New Energy at NNPC Limited, Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, highlighted the company’s role in managing Nigeria’s gas export obligations and strengthening regional energy cooperation.

Gas throughput reached about 80 million MMBtu in 2025, representing a 22 percent increase compared to previous years.

Discussions are also progressing on plans to boost pipeline capacity utilisation by 45 percent in 2026, positioning the project as a key pillar in the development of a reliable and commercially viable regional gas market.
