The Minerals Commission has ordered Heath Goldfields Limited to immediately cease operations at the Bogoso-Prestea Mines, effective June 24, 2025. This directive, invoking Regulation 22 of the Minerals and Mining (Health, Safety, and Technical) Regulations, 2012 (LI 2182), follows a thorough review of the company’s compliance with operational protocols and regulatory standards.
The Chief Inspector of Mines cited various regulatory breaches as the basis for this halt. In a statement from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, it was revealed that Heath Goldfields has been granted a 45-day timeframe to rectify these issues and undertake necessary services as mandated.
The company had initially received clearance to operate the mine on November 13, 2024, but has since failed to demonstrate any progress, with significant deterioration of land and infrastructure noted by May 16, 2025. Key facilities, such as the Process Water Treatment Plant and Tailings Storage Facility, were found in disrepair, and illegal mining activities were encroaching on its concessions.
Moreover, Heath Goldfields transported gold-bearing concentrates without the necessary approvals, violating its mining lease. Concerns raised by workers prompted a site visit from the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who subsequently ordered the Commission to issue statutory notices to the company.
In accordance with Regulation 200(3) of LI 2176, Heath Goldfields has also been given 120 days to rectify all violations or face termination of its mining license. This action reflects the ministry’s commitment to maintaining regulatory standards and safeguarding Ghana’s mineral resources.
