Liberia to Inaugurate First 20MW Solar Power Plant in October 2025

Liberia will inaugurate its first solar power plant in October 2025 as the country moves to reduce its heavy dependence on hydropower. The government confirmed that the 20-megawatt solar farm, located in Grand Bassa County, is part of the World Bank–funded Regional Emergency Solar Power Intervention Project, which seeks to boost reliable and affordable electricity across West Africa.

The $96-million package also covers the expansion of the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant and other technical assistance for Liberia’s energy sector. Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah said the project—launched by President Joseph Boakai in October 2024 and executed by ICC Offshore, will help close the gap created by seasonal water shortages and strengthen the country’s energy security.
