The Government of Liberia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mali-based AfriLight Energy to develop a 50-megawatt solar power plant integrated with a battery energy storage system, in a move aimed at expanding electricity access and strengthening the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.
The agreement was signed by Liberia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Hon. R. Matenokay Tingban, on behalf of the government, and Chief Executive Officer of AfriLight Energy, Ousman Coulibaly.
According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the project marks the beginning of a strategic partnership focused on accelerating Liberia’s transition to clean energy while improving the reliability and stability of the national electricity grid.
The planned facility will combine solar generation with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), allowing excess power generated during the day to be stored and supplied during peak demand periods or at night, when solar output is low.
Officials say the project is expected to reduce power outages, enhance grid stability, and improve overall electricity supply reliability across the country.
The initiative will be implemented through the Ministry’s Department of Energy under the supervision of Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Charles Umehai, as part of broader government efforts to expand electricity access and attract private investment into the sector.
The ministry added that improved access to reliable power is expected to support industrial growth, reduce dependence on diesel generators, and lower operational costs for businesses, while also boosting productivity in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, and education.
It further noted that the project is expected to create jobs for engineers, technicians, and other skilled workers during construction and operation, while also promoting technology transfer and capacity building in renewable energy.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Tingban said the agreement reflects the government’s commitment to adopting innovative energy solutions that align with national development priorities and global climate goals.
The project is also expected to strengthen investor confidence as Liberia continues efforts to expand electricity access and reduce reliance on imported fuel and diesel-based power generation.
