Ghana’s Petroleum Downstream Industry Unites for Fitness and Fun at COMAC’s PETFUN Games 2025

Ghana’s petroleum downstream sector swapped boardrooms for the playing fields on Saturday, 13th September, when industry players converged at the Burma Camp Sports Complex for the 2025 edition of the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies’ (COMAC) PETFUN Games.

The annual sporting event brought together Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketing Companies (LPGMCs), Bulk Import, Distribution, and Export Companies (BIDECs), regulatory partners, and other stakeholders in the downstream petroleum industry for a day of sports, networking, and wellness.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Board Chairman of COMAC, Mr. Gabriel Kumi, emphasised the significance of PETFUN in uniting the industry:

“This event is more than just sports. It is about building bridges, creating bonds, and energising our collective spirit as one industry. Together, we demonstrate that collaboration and wellness are essential to sustaining excellence in the downstream petroleum sector.”

From spirited football clashes and volleyball duels to sack races, table tennis showdowns, and swimming competitions, the day blended competitive energy with light-hearted fun.

A key highlight of this year’s games was a free medical screening initiative spearheaded by COMAC in collaboration with the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). The package included vital checks, laboratory tests, health talks, and free basic medications. Organisers said the initiative underscored the Chamber’s dedication to safeguarding the health of its workforce, while reinforcing the industry’s broader commitment to corporate social responsibility.

The Chief Executive Officer of COMAC, Dr. Riverson Oppong, also commended the companies for their commitment and sportsmanship:

“The enthusiasm, teamwork, and dedication we have witnessed here today reflect the values that drive our industry forward. PETFUN has proven once again that beyond competition lies collaboration, and beyond the pump lies a stronger, healthier community of people powering Ghana’s economy.”

The petroleum downstream industry has long been very crucial to Ghana’s energy development. Events like PETFUN play a vital role in strengthening networks across the value chain while reminding participants of the importance of balance between work and wellness.

For many, the legacy of PETFUN Games 2025 will extend beyond trophies, serving as a reminder that a healthy workforce is as critical to Ghana’s energy future as the pipelines, tanks, and fuel stations that keep the economy moving.
